Photographer Birney Imes was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1951. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Tennessee in 1973.
His photography has been in Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Texas Monthly, and The Commercial Dispatch.
Imes’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, La Bibliotheque Nationale, and others.
His work is featured in three books, Juke Joint (1990, 2012), Partial to Home (1991), and Whispering Pines (1994).
In 1996, Imes became owner and editor of The Dispatch, a newspaper based in Columbus, MS.
