Photographer Dan Guravich lived in Greenville, Mississippi. He was born in Canada in 1918. He earned a PhD in botany from the University of Wisconsin in 1949. He moved to Mississippi in 1949. He is well-known for his photographs of polar bears.
His photographs were published in several books and articles. The first book that utilized his photographs was Man and the River – The Mississippi, published in 1970 with Hodding Carter.
Guravich founded an organization in 1992 dedicated to protecting polar bears, called Polar Bears Alive.
Guravich passed away in 1997.
