Biography
George Cummings was born in Meridian, Mississippi, in 1938. He attended East Mississippi Community College, where he played football and baseball in the 1950’s. Cummings was inducted into the EMCC Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. After graduating EMCC, he went on to attend Livingston State (now known as the University of West Alabama).
Cummings is a guitarist and songwriter.
In 1959, he joined the group Darryl Vincent and the Flares, which was based in Meridian, but performed throughout southeast Mississippi. In the 1960’s he became a member of the band the Chocolate Papers. They became the house band for the Gus Steven Restaurant in Biloxi before moving to Chicago.
From Chicago, Cummings moved to New Jersey, where he founded the band Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show in 1968. They played in a nightclub called Bandbox. He played with Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Their first album was recorded in 1970. The band toured all over the world.
After quitting the band, he moved to Nashville, TN, to play and write songs.
He currently lives in New Jersey, where he continues to play.
