Biography of Jimmi Mayes
Jimmi Mayes is a drummer from Chicago, Illinois, who played with many musicians and groups. He was born and grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, living with his grandparents, while his parents worked in Chicago. He learned to read music and play the drums in the band at Jim Hill High School in the tenth grade (1957). He started playing in juke joints around Jackson, Mississippi. Mayes moved to Chicago after high school in 1960. He worked with Jimmy Reed, Robert Junior Lockwood, Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Hendrix, and more. Mayes’ career as a sideman has spanned over 50 years.
