Biography
Blanche Colton Williams was born in 1879 in rural Attala County, Mississippi. She attended the Industrial Institute and College (II&C) in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1894 for four years, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. She taught at Stanton College in Natchez and Grenada College in Grenada for a few years. She went to Columbia University in 1907 where she earned a master’s degree and then a doctoral degree (1910). She then taught at Hunter College. She helped establish the O. Henry Short Story Awards. Williams died at age 64.
