Biography
Danny (Daniel) Duncan Collum was born in 1954 in Greenwood, Mississippi, where he attended Greenwood public schools. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned a master’s degree in Fine Arts at George Mason University. In 1980, he became an associate editor at Sojourners in Washington, D.C.; he remained in this position for eight years and continues to contribute monthly articles there and at U. S. Catholic, a lay-edited national monthly magazine. He served as executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives from 1988 to 1993 and taught writing at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, from 1999 to 2005. As an English professor at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, he currently teaches creative
writing and print journalism and is the faculty co-advisor of The Kentucky River, a student-edited journal of art and literature. He has written three non-fiction books: Black and Catholic in the Jim Crow South (2006), Rising to Common Ground: Overcoming America’s Color Lines (2006), and Black and White Together: The Search for Common Ground (1996). He edited African Americans in the Spanish Civil War (1992). In 2011 he published his first novel White Boy, which is set during the summer of 1961 when the black and white Freedom Riders campaigned t to force desegregation of public transportation and public facilities. The coming-of-age novel is the story of protagonist, a white boy named Tommy Jackson.
