Biography of Joan Balfour Payne
Joan Balfour Payne is the daughter of Josephine Balfour Payne. She was born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1923. The family moved to Minnesota, and she was raised there. She graduated from Northrop Collegiate School for Girls (Minneapolis, MN) in 1937 and continued her studies with artist Gustav Krollman. In 1941, the family returned to Mississippi where they lived in an old plantation house in Natchez.
She married John Barber Dicks, Jr. in 1954 and moved to Tennessee. They were later divorced. They had four children. She illustrated the books her mother wrote and went on to write and illustrate her own children’s books. She died in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1973.
