Biography
Louis Cochran was born in 1899 in Shannon, Mississippi. The family moved to Baldwyn, Mississippi, in 1910. Cochran attended the University of Mississippi in 1916 where he was editor of the student newspaper and yearbook, batallion sergeant-major of the Student Army Training Corps unit, and on the
debate team. Cochran taught English and was a coach at two high schools in Cleveland and Crenshaw, Mississippi. He served as superintendent for two years. He attended Cumberland University in 1925, where he earned an L.L. B. degree.
Cochran lived in Jackson, Mississippi, during the Great Depression, where he wrote articles on Mississippi and Louisiana politicians. Cochran worked at the FBI in 1935 in several cities. He married
Bess Robbins White in 1937. In World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force in intelligence. He published numerous works including Alexander Campbell: The Man and His Mission (1965), Captives of the Word (1969) (co-authored with his wife, Bess Cochran), FBI Man: A Personal History (1966), Raccoon John Smith: A Novel Based on the Life of the Famous Pioneer Kentucky Preacher (1963), and Fool of God: A Novel Based Upon the Life of Alexander Campbell (1958), Hallelujah Mississippi (1955), Row’s End (1954), Boss Man (1939), Son of Haman (1937), Black Earth (1935), Flood Tides (1931), and The Lowly Gnome and Other Stories (1929).
He moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1964. Cochran died in 1974 in Nashville.
