Biography
Mary Louise Vaughn Shirley Hopson was born in Gowdy, Mississippi. She moved to Iowa in 1952 where she worked as a nanny and housekeeper at first. She then worked at Julia Lenobel’s exclusive boutique on Ingersoll Avenue. She married businessman Louis Hopson. She has volunteered as a court-appointed special advocate for children, for which she earned a United Way Volunteer Award for her work (in 1997). She then worked as a copywriter at U.S. West Communications until her retirement in 1995. She received the Iowa Legend Poetry Prize in 2000. She lives in Clive, Iowa.
