Biography
Phyllis Hawkins Harper was born in Mooreville, Mississippi, in 1933. She was the eldest of five children. She grew up on a farm in Fawn Grove. She attended Mooreville High School and Itawamba Junior College. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi. She lived in Atlanta during the time her husband attended Emory University.
Harper has worked as a schoolteacher at Carver School, a proofreader, writer, editor, and columnist at the Tupelo Daily Journal (now the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal). She worked at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal until 1997.
Harper died in 2009 in Tupelo, Mississippi.
